Life Without Sports Published at 3/24/2020

So far, even just a few days into our isolation from one another, it has been difficult. I sit in my house all day, occasionally leaving to make a toilet paper run to the store, hoping they aren’t all gone by the time I get there. Other than that, I’m forced to watch and wait, doing next to nothing and bored out of my mind. On any normal day, I would fill this empty void by watching something sports related on television, but the only thing sports related on now is SportsCenter, and even what they have to air is iffy at best when it comes to athletics. Occasionally, I get lucky enough to watch a re-airing of an old college basketball game, or maybe I can catch a classic NFL game somewhere, but life without these sports is hard to get through, especially with next to nothing else to do that would normally help me ignore sports when needed.
The NFL offseason, though one of my favorite parts of the year, is slowly winding down until we get to the draft, so that isn’t really a reliable thing to watch at this stage of free agency. Sure, there are a few big names still out there, but it’s mostly finished for the year, once again leaving me twiddling my thumbs and waiting for something, anything to happen. I hop on twitter every hour, hoping that something noteworthy has happened, but most of the time it is just empty and desolate of all sports-related news. Speculation flying around about whether or not this unimportant player is going to this team or that team. Random facts about a certain player and how great they should be this upcoming year, of course in hopes that there actually is a season and that doesn’t get cancelled as well. There is absolutely nothing to be done with relation to sports, and it is slowly killing me as I sit here watching The Office for the thousandth time, waiting for this all to go away so I can see someone, anyone, do anything on a field related to sports.
Sports are very important in the world we live in today and having them mostly ripped away from us for the next few weeks at least is painful to even the casual fan. Nothing new to talk about with your friends, and no way to meet those friends regardless. A world without sports is decidedly a very sad and empty place, and as we sit here, bunkering down in our homes, trying to get through this time, we can only reminisce of how it once was, watching and cheering for your team on the screen before you, a screen now filled with sitcoms and cartoons, with no sports coming in the near future. It is a horrible day for humanity, and I hope it all ends soon, so we can return to our “regularly scheduled programing” of football, basketball, and baseball. For now, however, we must wait.
