Analysis of Chicago Bears 2021 Draft Strategy
The lay of the land is that supposedly Pace and Nagy are on the hottest of hot seats and if true this certainly makes this draft extremely challenging. Nagy supposedly has at least veto power over a QB, but not other positions. One fact is that should the Bears trade up it will affect their next drafts adversely. Another fact is that the QB position is the most valuable. The Pace led organization is notoriously tight lipped and employs misdirection schemes in the draft process.
Generally drafting is broken down by need and best player available, but there is another key value that is pro readiness. Obviously targeting pro ready players only also will negatively impact the dynamics of BPA. Therefore if we look at Lance it is doubtful he would be considered ready for a GM and coach on the hotseat. Also certainly Foles would be gone as Chicago does not need two maestros to tutor him. The cherry on the sundee is Mitch 's recent history. Basically if we buy into Pace and Nagy being on the hot seat Lance would not be a target. As a fan I would love Lance to be their target, yet I'm looking beyond this season. I'd be happy with either Fields or Jones to be honest. The other thing that is worth noting in the big picture is that the talent level of QB's is increasing, year after year and this means that the supply will eventually limit the demand and I'd bet this happens in the near future. The next two years are forecasted to be strong at the position. Mighty Olines and WR corps will also attract free agents who should also increase in supply in the near future. Strong defences also increase opportunities for the offence. I'm not thrilled with any of the QB's beyond the five for a fit with the Bears. I would not waste a mid round pick.
If I were KIng I'd reason that ATL is simply too expensive. If I could connect with 6-10 for a flip, 3'd and the 2022 1st, I'd pull the trigger for any one of the five. Otherwise I'd almost certainly trade down with one of the top five teams in round two or the bottom of the first teams by flipping thirds and their 2022 second or flipping thirds, or their fourth this year +. I'd grab an OT or WR first or LB and then fill out with doubling down on these. Corners I'd pick up in 3+ rounds as I see a significant gap between top 3 that should be gone and the rest (exception Newsome) We could have more options on QB after the draft shakes out, maybe Carr for instance. If they stick at 20 I'd take BPA of OT WR in that order.
Newsome is someone on my "trade down for list" who I just love at CB4. Some other players who I'd be happy with are Jamin Davis (LB), Leatherwood (OT), Zaven Collins (LB), Sam Cosmi (OT). Naturally if Slater or Vera -Tucker, slide either would be my choice
