Open Rant: The Rise and Fall of Mike McCarthy

After being crushed by the Tennessee Titans (coached by Mike Mularkey no less) by a score of 47-25, there has been much needed attention turned to the head coach: Mike McCarthy. But is it reasonable to hammer a coach who has led his team to seven straight playoff appearances along with a Lombardi Trophy? On the surface it appears as yes it is, but the deeper you go, it isn't.

It seems like the 2010 Green Bay Packers may have been a product of veteran leadership (Donald Driver, Chad Clifton, Ryan Pickett, Charles Woodson), players entering their primes (Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings, Clay Matthews, Nick Collins) and no namers who would turn out to be capable players (James Starks, Erik Walden, Desmond Bishop, Tim Mashtay) then the actual coaching staff. That year remains a great memory but also a sad one, how come the Packers haven't able to even go to a Super Bowl with still the core players?

It's because sadly the league has caught up to Mike McCarthy. His West Coast offense that racked up points like crazy during the span from 2011-2014 have been figured out and McCarthy has done nothing to change his offense despite having different offensive pieces (Jared Cook (injured but wasn't used when healthy), Ty Montgomery, Aaron Ripkowski) he could use. His defensive coordinator Dom Capers whose defense won the Super Bowl back in 2010, has robbed Aaron Rodgers of his MVP years and the "zone blitz" concept that Capers uses hasn't worked for 6 years. The special teams, minus Mason Crosby and Micah Hyde, have ranked among the worst in the league.

Until the coaching staff is completely rebooted, the Packers will continue to decline, and as you can see, the players have given up on the season, so why shouldn't we?
