As of 1/29/17 John Lynch has just been announced as GM, and Kyle Shanahan is 90% going to be the HC (Unless there is some secret John Lynch esque candidate for HC). With John Lynch, his hiring is odd. He could have high upside (John Elway didn't have much experience when he was hired) as he has an excellent football mind, and is a Stanford guy. However, his downside is quite enormous. He could very well lead this team into 6 years of overpaying FA, reaching on draft picks, and trading away our future for Jared Goff esque prospects. In this offseason guide i'll go by the idea that he'll slightly overpay players and draft by value past the first round.

John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan are likely getting hired together based off relationship, meaning Shanahan will list the guys that fit what he wants to do and Lynch will act accordingly.

Cap Space: After cutting Kaepernick, Ahmad Brooks, and Antoine Bethea the 49ers will have near $109,000,000 meaning they'll be able to front load and overpay lots of free agents, about the only thing appealing about playing for us.

Resigning: Gerald Hodges: He deserves to be resigned at about 3 years $12,000,000

Quinton Patton: He should be retained as he could fit the Taylor Gabriel role in Shanahan's offense (that being said, so can Bruce Ellington) 1 year $1,000,000

Free Agency: This is where they'll need to add speed to the defense and add play makers on offense

QB Brian Hoyer: If we don't sign/draft a significant QB i wouldnt mind seeing Hoyer as the starter. If FA goes right, he could be in a Kirk Cousins situation where the surronding talent could elevate his play, a signing for roughly 2 years $5,000,000 would be solid

WR Alshon Jeffery: He would fit the dominant "Julio" receiver that Shanahan's offense could use, his market could be lower than usual so i expect the Niners to pay him his Pre-drug test market value at 5 years $60,000,000

WR Kendall Wright: Player with some upside and could end up being a good slot guy next to Alshon and Torrey at 2 years $4,500,000

OG TJ Lang: With the shape of our O-line and how loaded this free agency is with guards, it'd be a crime for the niners to leave this spot unaddressed, Lang would be a massive upgrade over Beadles at 5 years $45,000,000

C Stefen Wisniewski: Solid center who constantly gets underpaid, 49ers likely offer market value at 3 years $12,000,000

OT Mike Remmers: Solid depth tackle, could start at RT and should be obtained the palatable price of 1 year $2,000,000

DE/OLB Jabaal Sheard: Solid run defender/pass rusher, coming off a down year the 49ers should be able to acquire his services around 3 years $16,000,000

NT Brandon Williams: Great run stuffer, but terrible pass rush. Good nose tackles can be found around 3-5 million, with Williams being a great nose tackle, they'd be wise to sign him around 3 years $15,000,000

CB Dre Kirtzpatrick: A bit of a one year wonder, could be obtained around 3 years $15,000,000

S TJ McDonald: Could be a hybrid S/LB that would help with two needs at around 5 years $26,000,000

With these moves, the Niners would be left with around $57,000,000 in cap and would leave us with some quality talent

Draft: For the draft, the Niners need talent. I fully hope we trade down in order to acquire multiple players of quality talent over just a few. In this mock i have the Niners trading down with the Bills who are apparently dead set on running a solid QB in Tyrod Taylor out of town. Checking with the point system (and the fact teams often overpay slightly for such a premium pick) the Niners send the Bills our 1st round pick, and our 5th round pick in exchange for the Bills 1st round pick, 2nd round pick, 4th round pick, and a future 1st and 3rd.

1st round:Reuben Foster would be a logical choice at this spot, solid every down LB to go next to Bowman and could be the future defensive center piece

2nd round (49ers pick): At this slot, i'll stick with Walt's pick of John Ross, he has Brandin Cooks type talent and could be an instant impact rookie.

2nd round (Bills pick): At this slot, Christian Mccaffery would make logical sense, he helps make the Freeman/Coleman backfield from Atlanta in the form of Hyde/Mccaffery and would be the best talent available.

3rd round: Not trying to be unoriginal, but Walt's choice of Tim Williams would make too much sense at this spot. Impact edge rusher to go next to Lynch and fits the bill of best talent available.

4th round (49ers pick): Pat Elfein at C/OG would bring quality depth on the interior and would kick the inept Marcus Martin out finally.

4th round (Bills pick): Brad Kaaya at QB may not fit best available or even be a longterm fit at QB so this is just a choice to keep the 49er fans from going crazy over not going after a QB.

Notes for the future: This team showing competitiveness and growth throughout the season would be a successful 1st season for Shanahan. I didn't have the 49ers sign or draft a QB like Tony Romo or Deshone Kizer because I believe that would be settling. Its not a great class of QBs longterm, and if we're lucky enough we'll be in a position to draft Sam Darnold in the 2018 draft to be the longterm answer and potential franchise saver.
