Quality over Quantity and Free Agency on the New Orleans Saints

DRAFT

When it comes to New Orleans Saints defense I am scratching my head once again. Where to start at. For years the New Orleans Saints defense has been one of the better defenses for as long as I can remember. Even in their Super Bowl run their defense was not top notch. Teams could move the ball on them.

Once they release Junior Galette all they really had was Cameron Jordan on the D line. The LB and secondary positions really needed attention in a bad way. This was 2014-2015. Two seasons have past and ever since then whenever the Saints bring in a defensive player I have looked up their stats. The majority or them (90-95%) really had no game experience. Some have no experience. They were bench warmers.

It was a piecemeal defense at best. If you wanted to trade any of the defensive players they would not get much, maybe a pick around rounds 5-7.

Well all things have come to a head for Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis.

About the Brandon Cooks trade, I was not too happy about it. Yes Cooks wanted out. The Saints don’t need a player that doesn't want to be their. They were offered a pick from 2 different teams. The picks would have been either 14 or 18. They opted for 32 and 103. But it was not just Cooks that went to Patriots. The New Orleans Saints also gave them pick 118 in round 4 (by the way the NFL will be taking that pick from them).

I believe in how good the pick is not how many you get.

Now that the New Orleans Saints 8 selections in this years NFL Draft their selections the picks must really count. The New Orleans Saints are not to much on moving around in the draft (occasionally they will make a move, but not to often).

Is it too far fetched to think this much less even put it out their? Well here it is.

How about the New Orleans Saints trading 2 or 3 picks to get Miles Garrett or Jonathan Allen. These 2 players would significantly make a difference on the D line. The Saints could still have up to 5-6 picks after the trade. Another possibility is to use Coby Fleener as as trade bait to either get another pick or move up from the 32 spot. The 11 spot would be designated for a trade I described above.

Either Ruben Foster, Jabrill Peppers or Sidney Jones would be great improvement on the defense. But this is just wishful thinking on my part.

If the Saints defense could play as good as the offense then their would be hardly any holes in it.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS PAST FREE AGENCY MOVES

Sean Payton has been putting a band-aid on the defense for years. Just look at the defensive players that he has brought in from free agency over the years.

The year that Byrd and the other defensive players came onboard Sean Payton was out of football. Yes Byrd was hugh miss.

They never purser big name players free agency. When they do it's like they are playing darts blindfolded. Since 2006 there have 62 free agent signings by the Saints. How many have really contributed? How many were on the defensive side of the ball?
