The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is somewhat random.
-
Carolina Panthers: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Star Lotulelei, NT
The Panthers need tons of cornerback help. Chris Gamble will be released soon, while Captain Munnerlyn is a free agent this offseason. Josh Norman, meanwhile, has yet to prove that he can be a quality starter in the NFL.
A 6-1 corner with a potential high 4.3 40, Loucheiz Purifoy is a beast on special teams in terms of blocking kicks. He had two blocks in 2012.
-
Detroit Lions: Scott Chrichton, DE/OLB, Oregon State
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): DeMarcus Milliner, CB
The Lions have a huge need at defensive end. Kyle Vanden Bosch was recently released, while Cliff Avril will be a free agent March 12.
Scott Crichton has been very productive the past two seasons. He tallied 14.5 TFL and six sacks as a freshman and then 17.5 TFL and nine sacks as a sophomore.
-
Chicago Bears: Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Tavon Austin, WR,
Two of Chicago's key defensive tackles, Henry Melton and Amobi Okoye, will be free agents in March. Melton will probably be franchised, but losing him in 2014 would be painful. If that happens, the Bears will need a replacement.
-
Miami Dolphins: Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Bjoern Werner, DE
The Dolphins will likely franchise Randy Starks sometime soon. Starks will probably be around in 2013, but if Jeff Ireland can't re-sign him to a long-term deal, he'll need to find a new interior pass-rusher the following spring.
-
Cincinnati Bengals: Ed Reynolds, S, Stanford
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Xavier Rhodes, CB/S
Taylor Mays was so bad at safety that the Bengals had to move cornerback Nate Clements over to the position during the 2012 campaign. If they can't find an upgrade at safety this offseason, they'll have to do so the following spring.
-
Baltimore Ravens: C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Johnathan Hankins, NT
The Ravens wanted Dont'a Hightower, but the Patriots moved ahead of them and stole him. Maybe Ozzie Newsome will select another SEC linebacker as a successor for Ray Lewis and/or potential replacement for free agent Dannell Ellerbe sometime soon.
-
Atlanta Falcons: Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB, Oregon
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Datone Jones, DE
Dunta Robinson was just released. Brent Grimes is a free agent coming off a torn Achilles. The Falcons' cornerback situation is a mess.
Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, a third-team All-American, intercepted four passes and had 16 pass break-ups as a sophomore.
-
San Francisco 49ers: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Jonathan Cyprien, S
The 49ers can afford to take one of the best players available on the board with this pick because they have fewer needs than most teams. They could stand to find help at cornerback, especially given that as a 33-year-old, Carlos Rogers will be due more than $6 million.
-
Houston Texans: Louis Nix, NT, Notre Dame
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Kevin Minter, ILB
I've been told the Texans have a good amount of interest in nose tackle John Jenkins, but they strongly want to pick an inside linebacker in the first round this April. If they pass on a nose tackle, they may look for one the following spring.
-
Pittsburgh Steelers: Jeoffrey Pagan, DE/DT, Alabama
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB
The Steelers have to get it right with one of these first-round five-techniques at some point. Ziggy Hood and Cameron Heyward have shown very little throughout their brief NFL careers, so Pittsburgh will have to bring someone in to challenge them if they disappoint yet again in 2012.
-
New York Giants: David Yankey, OT, Stanford
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Damontre Moore, DE/OLB
The Giants just locked up William Beatty, which was a great move, but they still need to take care of the right tackle position. Right tackle David Diehl, a human turnstile, will be released soon.
-
Green Bay Packers: Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB, Alabama
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Tyler Eifert, TE
The Packers selected Nick Perry in the first round last April, but he hasn't done crap yet. If he's a no-show again in 2013, Ted Thompson may take a mulligan and opt to use another early selection on a rush linebacker.
-
New Orleans Saints: Deshazor Everett, CB, Texas A&M
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB
The Saints are never shy about spending an early selection on a cornerback. They'll have to do so again soon, as two of their top three shaky corners will be entering contract seasons in 2014.
-
New England Patriots: Brandon Coleman, WR, Rutgers
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Sylvester Williams, DT
The Patriots' receiver position is a mess. Wes Welker is a free agent in his mid-30s, while the disappointing Brandon Lloyd won't be around much longer. It's so bad that even Randy Moss is being discussed as a possible solution. Bringing him in would make things so much worse.
-
Denver Broncos: A.J. Johnson, ILB, Tennessee
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Eddie Lacy, RB
The Broncos have a huge void in the middle of their defense. They have to upgrade their interior lineman, safeties and inside linebacker positions. Keith Brooking was a huge liability in pass coverage this past season.
-
Seattle Seahawks: Chaz Green, OT, Florida
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Kawann Short, DT
Congratulations to the Seahawks for winning Super Bowl XLVIII! The MVP? Ruskell Wilkens, of course. I mean Russell Wilson.
Protecting Wilkens/Wilson will be paramount despite his unbelievable elusiveness. The Seahawks have a big void at the right tackle position. Breno Giacomini was constantly abused this past season.
