SMU's Courtland Sutton Generating NFL Interest

At one time, SMU was a big-time college football program. That ended with NCAA sanctions that came to be known as the death penalty. Other schools like Ohio State and Penn State have had worse scandals, yet escaped that level of punishment because of how devastating it was to the SMU program. Since then, the Mustangs have not produced a lot of talent for the NFL. This year, that will be different, as sources say they have been really impressed with junior wide receiver Courtland Sutton. 

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Sutton has size to him and he showed big-play ability last year by averaging 17.6 yards per catch. One scouting director told WalterFootball.com that in studying up on players before hitting the road for college training camps, Sutton's tape really stood out. As a sophomore, he totaled 862 yards and nine touchdowns on 49 receptions. In the 2015 season opener, SMU was blown out by Baylor, but Sutton had 82 yards and two touchdowns on only three receptions. 

Speed is always the question with big receivers, and sources say that Sutton is a long-strider with comparable speed to Josh Doctson. The Redskins took Doctson with the 22nd-overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, so Sutton's speed doesn't look to be a big concern.

Entering the 2016 season, there isn't a clear and heavy favorite as the top wide receiver prospect for the 2017 NFL Draft. There are speed questions with USC's JuJu Smith-Schuster and injury concerns with Clemson's Mike Williams. Players like Sutton and Western Michigan's Corey Davis have generated a buzz in scouting circles and will be watched closely this fall.
