Survey of Team Sources on Montez Sweat's Heart Condition

Over last weekend, news broke that one of the top prospects for the 2019 NFL Draft had a heart condition. Mississippi State's Montez Sweat was enjoying phenomenal draft momentum after notching a record-setting 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine and a dominating performance at the Senior Bowl, atop coming off two productive seasons for the Bulldogs.

Combine doctors, unfortunately, detected a pre-existing heart condition with Sweat, which they had to examine closely. After his great combine performance on the field, Sweat seemed destined to be a top-10 pick. Following public knowledge of the heart condition, WalterFootball.com reached out to sources around the league to survey if the heart condition could cause Sweat to slide in the 2019 NFL Draft. Overall, the responses suggested that a slide is possible, although it is too early to say for certain. Here is what six team officials said.

    NFC general manager No. 1: "[A slide] could really happen."

    AFC personnel director: "Maybe, [a slide is] possible."

    AFC national scout: "Not sure of details."

    AFC area scout, "No clue yet."

    AFC director of college scouting, "A little bit [of a slide], yes."

    NFC general manager No. 2: "Every medical team is different. I think his inconsistent play will be more of a factor."

Last year, a heart condition caused Michigan defensive tackle Maurice Hurst to slide to the third day of the 2018 NFL Draft when he probably would have been a second-day pick had the heart condition not been an issue. A heart condition caused former Lions and Saints defensive tackle Nick Fairley to have his career cut short after six seasons. Even more tragically, an unknown heart issue led to the sudden death of former Buccaneers and Bears defensive end Gaines Adams. Thus, NFL teams could be concerned about Sweat's NFL career, and right now, it looks like a slide in the 2019 NFL Draft is possible.
