I'm watching the Browns/Ravens Monday night. McCown drops back goes deep to Benjamin and it's incomplete. My first thought wasn't good throw/bad throw, or good coverage by the DB. Instead, it's "are they going to throw a flag?" They didn't by the way.
On the replay they show McCown getting drilled after releasing the ball. Again my first thought isn't "how tough of him to hang in there." Instead it was "That'd be roughing the passer if it were Brady"
Unfortunately that is where we have come to in the NFL. Refs control the flow of the game and instead of appreciating the game itself we're instead left with this tainted product focused on appealing to the masses who crave lots of scoring.
Will the NFL change anything? Probably not. Sure they'll look at it, or at least say they'll look at it in the offseason, but ask yourself this. What did you do last Sunday? What are you doing this Sunday? What did you do Monday morning when you went back to work? Exactly. Ratings are soaring and the money is flowing, and as long as that's happening we will continue to see the league protect their star investments. Make no mistake the NFL doesn't care about Josh McCown's health, or if Case Keenum goes brain dead from a concussion. No they're focused on the superstars staying healthy and not getting anymore lawsuits from former NFL players.
So the point of this rant? We, the fans, are not entirely innocent. We're still watching, still playing our fantasy football, still betting on the spread. As long as we continue to support this league the league will continue to give us a watered down product.
