Browns must NOT take Trubisky in Round 1

The Browns have a nearly 2 decade history of being the place where quarterbacks go to die. This may have many surrounding factors. Poor supporting players, inconsistent coaching staff, revolving door of GMs and therefore visions, etc. Regardless of the reasons, Cleveland is not where you go to have a Pro Bowl QB season.

Since 1999, the Browns have taken 4 QBs in the first round: Tim Couch, Brady Quinn, Brandon Weeden, and Johnny Manziel. While 3/4 failing make sense to me (I watched Brady Quinn all throughout college and I STILL don't understand why he failed in the NFL) the fact is that none of those guys has been IT.

Now 1996 was the last time a QB was NOT selected in the first round, and I highly doubt that this year will be the year that changes that considering how central QBs are to football and how willing teams are to reach on guys, regardless of their grade. So, it's highly likely that 1, and probably 2, QBs will be taken in the 1st round.

The Browns are not a team totally devoid of talent, but they certainly need upgrades at many positions. With the right personnel and either Cody Kessler or Brock Osweiler under center, the Browns could be a 7-9 or 8-8 team next year. I truly believe that with a bolstered O-line, a quality running game, and an improved defense, the Browns absolutely have a chance to overtake the Bengals in the AFC North and not be the worst team in the League. And I think drafting talented, quality, safe players with their 5 picks in the first 3 rounds can really REALLY help this franchise immediately.

I'm not against the Browns taking a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round, if they feel like the quality is there, but I am very against a QB with one of their two first round picks. Going over the Browns first round history is tough, and not just at the QB position. Trent Richardson, Cameron Erving, Phil Taylor, Barkevious Mingo, Justin Gilbert. The one gem since 1999 is Joe Thomas, and he's just a bona fide badass. I think Danny Shelton and Corey Coleman can also become gems in a long sad Browns first round draft history, but I'll give Danny another year to make the Pro Bowl and Coleman another 2. 3 years to grade an NFL player seems more than fair.

Now, I don't want the Browns to take Trubisky at all, not in any round. I don't think he will pan out in the NFL. Last year, I liked Carson Wentz and Dak Prescott but not Jared Goff or Paxton Lynch. I didn't think Goff was talented enough and I didn't think Lynch was smart enough. I don't feel like I've been proven wrong. Both guys will get some more time to figure it out, but I think both will come out as busts. Very expensive ones, as both the Rams and Broncos traded up to select them. Oh well.

As for Trubisky, I don't think he's smart enough either. The only two QBs I like in this draft are Deshaun Watson and Pat Mahomes. Both of those guys feel like they could develop into quality starters in the NFL. Trubisky will be out in 5 years and DeShone Kizer doesn't care enough about football. To be a successful quarterback in the NFL, you have to be smart, athletic, accurate, and confident bordering on arrogance. Did anyone watch Gruden's QB camp with Brett Favre? It was pretty telling. Favre said that he always felt like he could make throws that other guys couldn't and that empowered him to take chances other guys wouldn't. A QB needs that kind of confidence. Favre also said that, more than anything, he wanted to win. That kind of single-mindedness is just necessary to be a successful athlete at the highest levels. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don't have an obsession with winning bordering on absurd, you're not going to win. Look at Tom Brady. I hate the guy, but I would never say that he isn't competitive as fuck. Look at Michael Jordan. Look at Michael Phelps. Look at Serena Williams. Look at any athlete who has had unprecedented success. Obscene competitiveness is part of their genetic make-up. Trubisky doesn't have that. Kizer doesn't have that. Watson has it. I haven't done enough work on Mahomes yet, so I can't say about him.

So...I really think the Browns should NOT draft Trubisky. If they HAVE to take a QB at 12, the only one I'll accept is Watson, but I still think that a better choice at that juncture would be Christian McCaffrey. I don't care what you wanna say about Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson, McCaffrey will be a playmaker at the next level and Hue Jackson would know how to use him.
