The Steeler's ended their 3rd CB fiasco this offseason. The first came from not resigning Antwon Blake, who was rated one of the worst CBs in 2 decades. The second was when Brandon Boykin left for the Panthers after the Steelers traded for him and had him sit behind Blake (I have 1 rant already for that). And finally we come to the 3rd one which is them releasing Cortez Allen.

Cortez Allen was a 4th round draft pick in the 2011 draft class. Allen had a decent rookie campaign that looked promising, but that got the Steelers into trouble. Due to the fact the team was going into a rebuilding phase where most of the defense retired and the fact their other CB apparently demanded too much money, the Steelers made the huge mistake of giving a rookie CB a $24 million dollar contract over 4 years. No joke, sounds like something the 49ers or Browns would do.

Unfortunately, the Steelers learned the hard way why you never pay rookie CBs large amounts of cash. When he became a starter in 2013, Allen was horrible, being burnt on every play until he went out with an injury. In 2014, he missed the entire season going out with a broken thumb game 1, and in 2015 he hurt his knee preseason. He was so bad the Steelers kept him on the PUP list for all of 2015. Now, in 2016, they finally released him.

In his time after getting the new deal from 2012 - 2016, he started 7 games. That is the equivalent of paying over 3 million a game for a terrible CB.

Oh, and the CB they released? That was Keenan Lewis, who has been a monster for the Saints in 2013 and 2014.

The only good news is that the Steelers will now have more money to extend their players, such as their RG, RT, RB, and LDE.

There is plenty of bad news though. The Steelers will now be forced to enter 2016 with 1 proven vet at CB, and an average safety, the rest being rookies. It looks like the Steelers will still have one of the worst secondaries in 2016 next season. The only saving grace is that the QB-WR combos the Steelers face next season are almost as bad as their DBs.
