The Bengals' defensive line is a joke, with no pass rush and no ability to stop the run. Marvin Lewis will take his first defensive player, who will start for his soon-to-be improved defense.
I had MLB Terry Pierce here, but with the signing of MLB Wali Rainer, the Lions will look elsewhere. Detroit's offensive line is subpar, so adding a guard like Tucker will give Harrington more protection, but more importantly, he will open up more running lanes for James Stewart and Shawn Bryson. RB Lee Suggs is a huge possibility here, because Mariucci loves to run the ball with more than one back, but with Stewart and Bryson both on the team, I think he'll look at his offensive line before running back.
The Bears will make a dumb move by taking a running back. Anthony Thomas is a great back, but how could he possibly perform well with an injured offensive line and no passing game? Lee Suggs will be taken, but I think he and Thomas are equal. No need for a running back here. They'd be better off taking DE Tyler Brayton or OLB Nick Barnett.
The Houston Texans will be scoring many more points than last year, with the additions of Andre Johnson and Justin Fargas. Fargas has looked very impressive at the combines, and is the third running back on most teams' draft boards. The Texans could also go offensive lineman here, and take Wayne Hunter.
The Cardinals might have the worst linebacking group in the NFL. If Pierce gets drafted here, he might be the best linebacker the Cards have had in a long time. The additions of Pierce and Terrell Suggs will make Arizona's defense a lot better.
If Bill Parcells takes Rien Long with this pick, he will have one outstanding defense. He already took CB Terrence Newman, so the only big hole left is the one occupied by DT John Nix, a seventh round pick in 2001. The Cowboys could also take RB Onterrio Smith or QB Chris Simms, but Parcells will draft defense first.
I think the Jaguars will take the best corner available, to take Jason Craft's spot in the lineup. Another strong possibility is that the Jags take WR Bryant Johnson.
Mike Tice needs some consistency at corner, and Wilson could be the best defensive back on the team, if drafted here. The Vikes could also look at a receiving option, like Bryant Johnson.
The Ravens took Kyle Boller with their first pick, so they'll need someone for him to throw to, other than Todd Heap. Travis Taylor is too unreliable as a #1 receiver for Baltimore, and Randy Hymes is a good, young receiver, but the Ravens need another guy. Byrant Johnson is the best receiver available at this point.
Brayton, DT Kevin Williams (first round pick) and signee DE Chike Okeafor will turn Seattle's defensive lines from one of the worst to one of the best. Mike Holmgren could also go with MLB Gerald Hayes with this pick.
The Rams were very displeased with MLB Jamie Duncan's performance last year, so Hayes can come in and challenge Duncan for the starting spot right away.
Washington's best defensive lineman, Daryl Gardener went to Denver, so even though Spurrier might want to upgrade his offense more, he has to take Nick Eason. The Redskins could look at WR Anquan Boldin, TE Dallas Clark or S Julian Battle.
Wesley Walls is nearing retirement and his production has been dropping. Dallas Clark will make an immediate impact, and will be a great target for either Jake Delhomme or Rodney Peete.
Junior Seau is now a Miami Dolphin, so the Chargers will need to draft a replacement. They could also go with CB Kevin Garrett, which would allow Ryan McNeil to move to free safety.
The Chiefs have seen what happens to their offense when Priest Holmes goes out with injury. They need to obtain a good backup for Holmes, so their season won't go down the drain, if Priest can't play on Sundays. Onterrio is the best player available at this point. If he's gone, the Chiefs might look for the top linebacker available.
Boldin is a very nice receiver, and he will be brought in to compete with Josh Reed for the starting wide receiver job. Whether he starts or not, taking Anquan Boldin here will give Drew Bledsoe three good receivers.
Miami's offensive line is awful, especially at right tackle and both guard spots. This is the Dolphins' first pick of this draft (Ricky Williams trade), and I think they will take an offensive lineman. It will be either OT Brett Williams, Hunter or G Vince Manuwai.
The most sacks any Patriot had last year was 5?. The Pats already brought in OLB Roosevelt Colvin to help them with getting to the quarterback, but Peterson at DE or on the other side of Willie McGhinest could generate a monster pass rush for Belichick. Peterson can also play DT, so Belichick might like his versatility.
Even though he signed Jake Plummer, Mike Shanahan is no dummy, so he knows that the Jake Plummer expierement will probably not work out. Steve Beurelein is the backup, but he's almost 40. The Broncos need a young quarterback in the mix.
Cleveland had trouble defending even average receivers last year. As dumb as Butch Davis is, he has to know that he needs an upgrade here. Florence could compete for a starting job, even though he is a reach in round 2.
Mo Lewis is a good outside linebacker, but he is getting old. With no immediate needs, the Jets can afford to take a young linebacker here, who should start in a few years.
Norman Hand will probably be a cap casulaty, and he will leave a huge hole in the Saints' defensive line. Kenny King can fill that huge hole. CB Dennis Weathersby is also a possibility.
This is the Falcons' first pick of the draft (Peerless Price). The Falcons could not stop any tall wide receivers last year, so I believe that they will take one of the taller corners in this draft, Dennis Weathersby (6'1''). Once a mid-first round projection, Weathersby's stock has slipped because he was shot on Monday. He will be out a couple of months, and may not be ready for the season opener. I still think he's worth a second round pick.
One of the Giants' better offensive linemen, Mike Rosenthal, has left for the Vikings, so I think that they will use this pick to find a replacement for him. Another tackle they could take is George Foster from Georgia.
The 49ers had trouble establishing a consistent pass rush, other than from Andre Carter. They need a guy on the other side. Pace can challenge DE John Engelberger for the starting role. They 49ers will also consider DT Ian Scott.
Perhaps Tony Dungy's best player on defense, OLB Mike Peterson, left for Jacksonville. Hobson is a good prospect at outside linebacker, and could take OLB David Thornton's job right away.
Pittsburgh was unable to land Dexter Jackson in free agency, so they will look towards Julian Battle. The Steelers really need help in their secondary, and Battle can be the answer. He is a great pick at #59.
Since Bruce Matthews retired, the Titans have had no one at center. Faine can step in and start right away.
John Gruden exposed the weakest link of the Eagles' defense in the NFC Championship game, so this is a position that must be upgraded. Marc Simeoneau, nor Levon Kirkland will get the job done.
With their second pick in a row, the Eagles will probably take a replacement for Hugh Douglas, whom they lost to Jacksonville.
Rod Woodson is old, Derrick Gibson is expierenced, and thats it for Oakland at safety. There is no depth. The Raiders, who were already thin at defensive back last year, lost Tory James, could use another guy in the mix.
Jon Gruden loves to run the football, but neither Mike Alstott, nor Michael Pittman are good enough to be starters. At times, the running game disappeared last year. Musa Smith should be the best back on the roster, by September.
