Teams Don't See Purdy as a First-Rounder Yet

Even in the defensively challenged Big XII conference, a quarterback with the production of Iowa State's Brock Purdy is going to garner some attention for the next level. Purdy has been a point machine the past two seasons as the leader of Matt Campbell's Cyclones. In 2019, Purdy completed 66 percent of his passes for 3,982 yards with 27 touchdowns and nine interceptions. That production history has some in the media projecting Purdy to be a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but in speaking with team sources, they don't see hims as a first-round talent at this time.
"No, [Purdy's] not a high pick for sure," said one director of college scouting. "He's an excellent decision-maker with accuracy to facilitate everything well but more of a dink-and-dunk type rather than a big-time playmaker. He does not have an elite trait, is stumpy looking, and doesn't make many off-schedule plays. He can't escape blitz pressure. He's not even fully a mid-rounder yet, but the quarterback position always gets overinflated."
Another area scout was a bit higher on Purdy, "I don't see him as a first-rounder, but I liked the kid when I was watching their games. He showed anticipation, accuracy and poise. I think he's more of a Day 2 guy." Listed at 6-foot-1, 212 pounds, Purdy lacks size for the next level, but in recent years, a number of short quarterbacks have been selected high in the first round - Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray -, so Purdy can definitely overcome his smaller measurements if he dominates as a passer.
Of course things can and will change over the months to come. In August of 2019, no team was talking about Joe Burrow being an early-round pick much less going as the No. 1-overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. At this time two years ago, Kyler Murray was expected to be playing professionally for the Oakland A's rather than going to the NFL, so Purdy should not be written off. But heading into the 2020 season multiple team sources said they did not see Purdy as a future first-rounder when studying him this preseason.
