2009 NFL Draft Re-Mock: Picks 17-32

This is a 2009 NFL Draft Re-Mock, just in case you missed the big blue letters up top. I'm going back to 2009 and re-distributing all of the 2009 NFL Draft prospects to all of the teams in the 2009 NFL Draft order. This 2009 NFL Draft Re-Mock is based on how these players have performed in their careers, as well as the needs each team had back in 2009.

2009 NFL Draft Re-Mock: Picks 1-16

17. New York Jets: Captain Munnerlyn, CB, South Carolina
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Mark Sanchez, QB (trade)
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Chris Wells, RB
    
    Rather than trade up for Mark Sanchez - blegh - the Jets probably should have looked for a player to help them defend Wes Welker. Pairing Darrelle Revis with Captain Munnerlyn would have been a solid move.
    
    
18. Denver Broncos: Andy Levitre, G, Oregon State
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Robert Ayers, DE
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Aaron Maybin, DE
    
    The Broncos already drafted LeSean McCoy, so it only makes sense that they bolster his blocking. Guard was a big need for the Broncos heading into the 2009 NFL Draft, so Andy Levitre would have provided a big upgrade.
    
    
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma

    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Josh Freeman, QB
    
    The Buccaneers wanted a quarterback, but there aren't worth taking here. Josh Freeman had a couple of solid seasons in Tampa Bay, but personal issues screwed his career up, unfortunately.
    
    What Tampa Bay should have done was obtain an upgrade over the anemic Jeremy Trueblood. All of these years later, and I have no idea how Trueblood maintained a job for so long.
    
    
20. Detroit Lions: William Beatty, OT, Connecticut

    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Brandon Pettigrew
    
    I made this pick William Beatty, and I'm sticking to it. Beatty had several terrific seasons with the Giants before getting hurt. Here was what I wrote in my 2009 NFL Mock Draft:
    
    Detroit doesn't have to play Matthew Stafford right away, but once he enters the lineup, the front office better make sure that he's well-protected; otherwise, they're risking a possible Joey Harrington 2.0 (minus the caviar and piano-playing).
    
    
    
    
    
21. Philadelphia Eagles: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Jeremy Maclin, WR
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Robert Ayers, DE
    
    The Eagles selected Jeremy Maclin, but if they could have gotten Michael Crabtree, they would have done so in a heartbeat. Crabtree has not completely lived up to expectations in his career, but he's at least been mostly healthy. The same can't be said for Maclin.
    
    
22. Minnesota Vikings: Chris Clemons, SS, Clemson

    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Jeremy Maclin, WR
    
    If it seems like the Vikings have had issues at the safety position for a long time, it's because that happens to be the case. Back then, the Vikings were starting Madieu Williams and Margaery Tyrell Johnson. Chris Clemons would've been a big help.
    
    
23. New England Patriots: Jason McCourty, CB, Rutgers
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Patrick Chung, S
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Rey Maualuga, ILB
    
    If it's a Rutgers player, Bill Belichick is interested. An upgrade at cornerback was needed back in 2009, and Belichick could have ended up with two McCourtys on his team.
    
    
24. Atlanta Falcons: William Moore, S, Missouri
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Peria Jerry, DT
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Ziggy Hood, DT
    
    The Falcons still start William Moore at safety, so they're obviously happy with his play. Unfortunately, they have to pick him a bit earlier in this redraft than they did in real life.
    
    
    
    
    
25. Miami Dolphins: Max Unger, C/G, Oregon
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Vontae Davis, CB
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Darius Butler, CB
    
    If only the Dolphins could look ahead into the future and see the big need they'd have for offensive linemen. Max Unger can play all three interior positions, so he could start at center and then move to guard when the Dolphins would eventually pick Mike Pouncey.
    
    
26. Baltimore Ravens: Paul Kruger, DE, Utah
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Michael Oher, OT
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Vontae Davis, CB
    
    Paul Kruger helped the Ravens win a Super Bowl, so it's tough to argue against this pick, especially when considering that Kruger is one of the top players available in this thin class.
    
    
27. Indianapolis Colts: Matt Slauson, G, Nebraska
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Donald Brown, RB
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Peria Jerry, DT
    
    ESPN glorifies Bill Polian by calling him the "Commander-in-Chief," but he screwed up big time by not bolstering Peyton Manning's pass protection. Maybe Manning wouldn't have needed all of those neck procedures if his offensive line could keep him upright.
    
    
28. Buffalo Bills: Eric Wood, C, Louisville
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Eric Wood, C
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Brandon Pettigrew, TE
    
    Let's keep this the same. Unlike the Aaron Maybin selection, the Bills hit a home run with picking Eric Wood at No. 28. Wood has been a stud center for them all of these years.
    
    
    
    
    
29. New York Giants: Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Hakeem Nicks, WR
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Knowshon Moreno, RB
    
    This pick mirrors Baltimore's Paul Kruger selection. Hakeem Nicks ultimately left on bad terms, but you have to say that it was a successful draft choice because Nicks helped the Giants win a Super Bowl. Besides, there aren't many talented prospects remaining.
    
    
30. Tennessee Titans: Terrance Knighton, DT, Temple
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Kenny Britt, WR
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Sean Smith, CB/S
    
    The Titans ultimately chose Sen'Derrick Marks in the second round. Terrance Knighton makes a lot of sense here instead to bolster the interior of the defensive line.
    
    
31. Arizona Cardinals: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Chris Wells, RB
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Donald Brown, RB
    
    This will save the Cardinals from that awful Beanie Wells selection. Knowshon Moreno has slacked off at times in his career, but he finally showed what he is capable of this past season. He would've been a clear upgrade over a decrepit Edgerrin James and Tim Hightower.
    
    
32. Pittsburgh Steelers: B.J. Raji, NT, Boston College
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Ziggy Hood, DT
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Alex Mack, C
    
    Casey Hampton's successor. As with the previous pick, the Cardinals are getting a player who has underwhelmed at times, but has also shown big-time potential in other instances. More importantly, the Steelers wouldn't have to worry about B.J. Raji in an impending Super Bowl matchup against the Packers.
