2009 NFL Draft Re-Mock

This is a 2009 NFL Draft Re-Mock, just in case you missed the big blue letters up top. I'm going back to 2009 and re-distributing all of the 2009 NFL Draft prospects to all of the teams in the 2009 NFL Draft order. This 2009 NFL Draft Re-Mock is based on how these players have performed in their careers, as well as the needs each team had back in 2009.

1. Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
   Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Matthew Stafford, QB
   My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Matthew Stafford, QB
   
   In a rare re-draft moment, the No. 1 pick in both my mock and the actual draft will be the choice. The Lions would choose Matthew Stafford if they had to do it all over again. Stafford has yet to lead the team deep into the playoffs, and he has shown an alarming lack of interest in improving his mechanics, but he still has tons of potential.
   
   The Lions needed a franchise quarterback following the Joey Harrington and Mike McMahon days. They could re-take Stafford and surround him with a better coaching staff.
   
   
2. St. Louis Rams: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

   My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Jason Smith, OT
   
   It's amazing that people getting paid millions of dollars could come to the conclusion that someone like Jason Smith is worth the No. 2 overall pick. I wasn't completely confident in my opinion, but I believed Eugene Monroe was better than Smith. That's the direction the Rams should have gone instead. Monroe would've been an incredible upgrade over the inept Alex Barron, whereas Smith proved to be his equal.
   
   
3. Kansas City Chiefs: Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB, Texas
   Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Tyson Jackson, DE
   My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Aaron Curry, ILB
   
   Tyson Jackson was a ridiculous pick. Then again, people thought Aaron Curry should've gone ahead of him, and Curry would have been even worse. The teams at the top of this draft proved to be pretty inept.
   
   The Chiefs would go with Brian Orakpo in this scenario. They had Tamba Hali already, but nothing across from him. Having Orakpo and Hali rush the quarterback would've been insane.
   
   
4. Seattle Seahawks: Jairus Byrd, S, Oregon
   Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Aaron Curry, LB
   My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Michael Crabtree, WR
   
   Once upon a time, the Seahawks stunk at drafting. Before they were able to land Richard Sherman, Russell Wilson and Kam Chancellor in the middle rounds, they chose bums like Aaron Curry No. 4 overall when everyone knew that Michael Crabtree would have been the correct choice.
   
   Well, Crabtree should have been the pick back then at least. Jairus Byrd is the proper selection now. He would've been a big upgrade over Brian Russell.
   
   
   
   
   
5. Cleveland Browns: Clay Matthews, DE/OLB, USC
   Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Alex Mack (trade down)
   My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB
   
   I mocked Brian Orakpo to the Browns. Here's why: "Cleveland simply couldn't get to the quarterback in 2008. The team managed 17 sacks, and no player had more than four. This really needs to change quickly. Eric Mangini took Vernon Gholston with the No. 6 overall selection last year, and this pick mirrors that one."
   
   Except that Orakpo is a billion times better than Gholston. So is Clay Matthews.
   
   
6. Cincinnati Bengals: Alex Mack, C, California

   My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Andre Smith, OT
   
   The Bengals still go offensive line, but they'll choose Alex Mack instead. They've had issues at center for years. In fact, the pedestrian Kyle Cook was still starting for them back in 2009. Mack would've changed all that. Considering how much Mack is being paid, he'd definitely be considered No. 6 overall in a re-draft.
   
   
7. Oakland Raiders: Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech

   Oh, Raiders... Just for old times' sake: Darrius... Heyward...Bey...is a... great... playa...
   
   Oakland's top three defensive ends heading into 2009: Derrick Burgess, Jay Richardson and Greyson Gunheim. They also had Trevor Scott on the roster, but he was an unknown commodity as a 2008 sixth-rounder. Michael Johnson would have bolstered the pass rush.
   
   
8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
   Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Eugene Monroe, OT
   My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Mark Sanchez, QB
   
   Cornerback was one of Jacksonville's top needs in the 2009 offseason. The team went on to draft Derek Cox in the third round, which did not work out. Vontae Davis obviously would have, and with him on the roster, the Jaguars wouldn't have to worry about going up against him twice per year.
   
   
   
   
   
9. Green Bay Packers: Desmond Bryant, DE/DT, Harvard
   Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: B.J. Raji, NT
   My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Tyson Jackson, DE
   
   My mock draft had the Packers taking a defensive lineman. Green Bay actually obtained a defensive lineman. So, it's only fitting that my redraft has them choosing a defensive lineman. Desmond Bryant is a stud five-technique who would have been a better choice than both B.J. Raji and Tyson Jackson - though the former did have one great year and helped the Packers win a Super Bowl.
   
   
10. San Francisco 49ers: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Michael Crabtree, WR
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Eugene Monroe, OT
    
    Why'd the 49ers take Michael Crabtree? Because their starting receivers were a decrepit Isaac Bruce and someone named Brandon Jones. Though Percy Harvin missed almost all of 2013, he would have been the better choice. There's a reason the Seahawks traded so much for him.
    
    
11. Buffalo Bills: Michael Bennett, DE, Texas A&M

    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Michael Oher, OT
    
    The Bills ended up drafting Aaron Maybin, who recently retired. If they really wanted a defensive end, they should have considered Michael Bennett, who signed a 4-year, $32 million contract this offseason.
    
    
12. Denver Broncos: LeSean McCoy, RB, Pittsburgh
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Knowshon Moreno, RB
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: B.J. Raji, NT
    
    Knowshon Moreno was considered a reach at the time (as you'll see, I had him No. 29 in this mock). Josh McDaniels made some terrible draft-day decisions, as he had no concept of draft value, as proven when he chose a blocking tight end in the second round. That decision still baffles me.
    
    If McDaniels could see the future, he'd know that he should've gone with either LeSean McCoy or Arian Foster if he had his heart set on a running back. McCoy gets the nod because he's been healthier than Foster.
    
    
    
    
    
13. Washington Redskins: Brian Cushing, OLB, USC

    I mocked Brian Cushing to the Redskins for a reason. Their two starting outside linebackers back then were Rocky McIntosh and Alfred Fincher. Cushing obviously can also play in the 3-4, so he would have been a nice piece next to London Fletcher over the past few seasons.
    
    
14. New Orleans Saints: Keenan Lewis, CB, Oregon State

    This pick makes a ton of sense. Keenan Lewis is one of the top players available, and he'd fill a big need at corner for the Saints. Also, New Orleans ended up signing Lewis as a free agent last spring, so the coaching staff obviously has interest in him.
    
    
15. Houston Texans: Arian Foster, RB, Tennessee

    It's hard to believe that Arian Foster went undrafted. Luckily for the Texans, they don't have to spend the No. 15 overall pick on him like they do in this re-draft.
    
    
16. San Diego Chargers: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
    Actual 2009 NFL Draft Pick: Larry English, DE
    My 2009 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Eben Britton, OT
    
    Instead of making dumb selections like Larry English - what the hell happened to him? - the Chargers should have spent their energy bolstering Philip Rivers' protection. They ended up doing this eventually, but they could have kept their franchise quarterback from getting too banged up in the first place.
