2010 NFL Mock Re-Draft: Round Two

This is a 2010 NFL Mock Re-Draft of Rounds 2 and 3 for Friday evening's NFL Draft coverage. With all of the trades that will go down, I don't expect to get many of these right; in fact, I'll be thrilled if I nail one or two correctly. But it's still fun to speculate where the top prospects will go on Day 2 of the 2010 NFL Draft.

33. St. Louis Rams: Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois
    The Rams have a new franchise quarterback, so it only seems natural that they would want to give him a stud receiver. Look at the previous two quarterbacks taken in the top three: The Falcons complemented Matt Ryan with a left tackle, while the Lions gave Matthew Stafford a talented tight end in Brandon Pettigrew.
    
    This pick should be used on a player to benefit Sam Bradford, whether that's Arrelious Benn, Golden Tate or Rob Gronkowski.
    
    
    
34. Minnesota Vikings: Chris Cook, CB, Virginia
    As if literally fumbling away the NFC Championship wasn't enough, the Vikings lost Cedric Griffin to a torn ACL. Griffin probably won't be ready for the season opener, which means that the cornerback position becomes one of Minnesota's bigger priorities this offseason. I know the Vikings just signed Lito Sheppard, but that was just for a 1-year deal. He's not any good anyway; they're in trouble if he has to start.
    
    Cornerbacks are flying off the board quickly. The Vikings will probably want to make sure they get one before they're all gone.
    
    
35. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Corey Wootton, DE, Northwestern
    The Buccaneers love Corey Wootton; he fills their current greatest position of need. They need to get more pressure on the quarterback.
    
    
36. Kansas City Chiefs: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
    Of all the potential landing spots atop Round 2, this makes the most sense to me. Offensive coordinator Charlie Weis is Jimmy Clausen's former coach. Matt Cassel has a huge bonus due before the 2011 season, and he didn't exactly shine in Kansas City last year.
    
    
37. Philadelphia Eagles: Brandon Ghee, CB, Wake Forest
    What in the world are the Eagles going to do at cornerback? With Sheldon Brown gone, Philadelphia needs help across from Asante Samuel (or "Asuckte Samuel," as my friend Drew calls him because of his horrific tackling deficiency).
    
    Also, keep in mind that Samuel won't be around much longer. The matador-like corner is 29 and due an $8.4 million salary in 2012. It's likely that 2011 will be his final season in Philadelphia, though he could be gone after 2010.
    
    
    
    
    
38. Cleveland Browns: Colt McCoy, QB, Texas
    Colt McCoy is a mini-Kyle Orton clone, but he may be the quarterback that Mike Holmgren wants. McCoy is accurate in the short and intermediate passing game, and Holmgren may see some Joe Montana in him. That's crazy, but then again so is giving Jake Delhomme $7 million.
    
    
39. Oakland Raiders: Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland
    Al Davis didn't take a "great player" in Round 1. Instead, he drafted a great player. Unfortunately, that great player was the first inside linebacker to go in the top eight since the early 1990s and fills a very low position of value.
    
    I'm not fully convinced Davis is making these picks anymore. He always takes height-weight-40 guys. McClain doesn't fit that profile. Is he too old/sick and become just a figure head? I hope not.
    
    
40. Miami Dolphins: Cam Thomas, NT, North Carolina
    I think Cam Thomas is the type of player Bill Parcells is looking for. He fills a huge hole at nose tackle.
    
    
41. Buffalo Bills: Rodger Saffold, OT, Indiana
    This offseason, Bills general manager Buddy Nix spoke of his team's quarterbacks: "If they're good enough, they'll have a chance to be here ... It's hard to throw when you're lying on your back." Buffalo clearly needs help at left tackle.
    
    
42. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Amari Spievey, CB, Iowa
    Cornerbacks could continue to fly off the board. The NFL has become a passing league and teams are apparently desperate for them.
    
    
    
    
    
43. Baltimore Ravens: Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
    Ozzie Newsome laughs yet again at all the crappy teams in the NFL as he takes one of the top players available, giving Joe Flacco yet another weapon to work with.
    
    
44. New England Patriots: Sergio Kindle, DE/OLB, Texas
    Chad Henne effortlessly torched New England's secondary in early December. Henne, like Drew Brees the week before, had no pressure in his face. The Patriots had absolutely no pass rush in 2009.
    
    
45. Denver Broncos: J.D. Walton, C, Baylor
    Maurkice Pouncey became the Draft Day favorite to go to Denver, but it just didn't happen. The Broncos must find a center.
    
    
46. New York Giants: Brian Price, DT, UCLA
    Fred Robbins is a free agent; Rocky Bernard was a bust signing; and Chris Canty barely played in 2009. Defensive tackle has to be upgraded. Brian Price falls out of circumstance, but he's the best player available at this juncture.
    
    
47. New England Patriots: Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona
    There have been rumors that the Patriots will trade one of their second-round picks for Greg Olsen. If they don't do this, they may use one of their second-rounders on Rob Gronkowski. New England needs help at tight end, especially considering that Wes Welker may not be ready to play by Thanksgiving.
    
    
48. Carolina Panthers: Mardy Gilyard, WR/KR, Cincinnati
    Steve Smith recently stated that he would love to have another fast receiver to complement him on offense. Ask, and you shall receive. Mardy Gilyard, as seen in the Senior Bowl, is a deep-play threat, and he would satisfy two huge areas of need for the Panthers: No. 2 wideout and return specialist.
    
    
49. San Francisco 49ers: Dominique Franks, CB, Oklahoma
    Corner is a big need for the 49ers. Shawntae Spencer is coming off a terrific year, but the team could never figure out what to do across from him. Overpriced and aging Nate Clements was benched during the 2009 season, and was replaced by the mediocre Tarell Brown.
    
    
50. Kansas City Chiefs: Linval Joseph, NT, East Carolina
    Scott Pioli obtained his "Richard Seymour" in the 2009 NFL Draft when he took Tyson Jackson. Pioli will find his "Vince Wilfork" here.
    
    
51. Houston Texans: Ben Tate, RB, Auburn
    The Texans are usually up front regarding what they are looking for. Virtually everyone - from the owner down to the head coach - has stated that addressing the running back position is a huge priority for them this offseason.
    
    Like Ryan Mathews, Ben Tate is a great fit for Houston's offense.
    
    
52. Pittsburgh Steelers: Perrish Cox, CB/KR, Oklahoma State
    Cornerback is a huge need, as the Steelers couldn't even stop Bruce Gradkowski from orchestrating three fourth-quarter touchdown drives in a crucial December game.
    
    
    
53. New England Patriots: Alex Carrington, DE/DT, Arkansas State
    Trading Richard Seymour for Oakland's 2011 first-round pick was a good move - New England will likely have a top-10 pick next April - but the team now has a hole up front, as we all saw when Baltimore gashed this defense in that playoff blowout.
    
    
54. Cincinnati Bengals: Taylor Mays, S, USC
    Though they drafted Jermaine Gresham in the first round, I still think the Bengals love Taylor Mays - he's a perfect fit for their defense in a position of need.
    
    
55. Philadelphia Eagles: Nate Allen, FS, South Florida
    The Eagles need to replace Brian Dawkins, and Nate Allen is steal toward the end of Round 2.
    
    
56. Green Bay Packers: Dexter McCluster, RB/WR/KR, Ole Miss
    Running back isn't a huge need for the Packers, but depth at the position will be added this offseason. Green Bay needs a capable complement for Ryan Grant, and Brandon Jackson doesn't look like he's the answer.
    
    This goes along with Ted Thompson's Best Player Available formula. Dexter McCluster can do a lot of things for Green Bay on offense and special teams.
    
    
57. Baltimore Ravens: Lamarr Houston, DE/DT, Texas
    The Ravens can use some help at 3-4 end, and once again they're taking a highly rated player instead of horribly reaching for someone like the Jaguars.
    
    
58. Arizona Cardinals: Jared Veldheer, OT, Hillsdale
    If you weren't convinced that the Cardinals needed tackle help, you have to be now after watching the Saints put tons of pressure on Kurt Warner in the second round of the playoffs.
    
    Mike Gandy, who just entered his 30s, surrendered 6.5 sacks in 2008, and gave up eight sacks and eight penalties this year before landing on IR. He's not on the team anymore. Backup Jeremy Bridges played relatively well in relief of Gandy at first, but was exposed as the year progressed.
    
    
59. Dallas Cowboys: Major Wright, FS, Florida
    Despite getting burnt for a long touchdown against the Vikings, Gerald Sensabaugh played well this year. The Cowboys will now have to focus on finding an upgrade at free safety.
    
    
60. Seattle Seahawks: Everson Griffen, DE, USC
    This is a huge steal for the Seahawks, as they land the top player available at a position of need. Pete Carroll has to take one of his former guys, right?
    
    
    
    
    
61. New York Jets: Reshad Jones, S, Georgia
    The Jets traded away Kerry Rhodes, so they'll be looking for a new free safety to knock Eric Smith out of the lineup. Reshad Jones seems like a natural fit for Rex Ryan's defense.
    
    
62. Minnesota Vikings: Vladimir Ducasse, G/OT, UMass
    The Vikings really struggled to run the football last year. Both center John Sullivan and right guard Anthony Herrera underperformed in that department.
    
    
63. Indianapolis Colts: Charles Brown, OT, USC
    The Colts got their pass-rusher in Jerry Hughes at the end of Round 1. They need an upgrade at left tackle, and Charles Brown is the best player available.
    
    
64. New Orleans Saints: Daryl Washington, OLB, TCU
    Help is needed to stabilize a weak linebacking corps. Scott Fujita is gone, while Scott Shanle began the year well, but wore down against the run late in the season.
    
    I've had Daryl Washington going as high as No. 34 before, so he's a huge steal at the bottom of Round 2.
