The Brooklyn Nets Draft Review and Outlook Published at 6/27/2016
|
I will be going through all 30 teams, grading their drafts & giving my thoughts on what should happen for that team going forward.
The Brooklyn Nets
The Draft:
Rd 1. Pick #20: Caris LeVert, G/F, Michigan
The Nets traded into the first round when they dealt Thaddeus Young to the Pacers in a 3-team deal. Although the return wasn’t hefty, the Nets did a good job by acquiring assets for the future – about time! LeVert is a lottery-level talent and is very versatile offensively – he can run the point and score in a variety of ways – and has nice length and solid athleticism which will help him on the defensive end. LeVert’s well-documented length injury history makes this pick risky, but I like this for the Nets.
Grade: B
Rd 2. Pick #42: Isaiah Whitehead, G, Seton Hall
The Brooklyn native makes a lot of sense for the Nets here, too. Whitehead was an inefficient scorer at Seton Hall – shooting less than 38% from the field last year – but one can still clearly see his talent at putting the ball through the hoop. He’s built and has solid athleticism – averaging over a block per game as a guard last year – and can put the ball on the deck and shoot from deep. For the pros, he must develop a better shot selection, learn to play under control and within a system. His swagger on the court reminds me of Lance Stephenson - which is both a good and bad thing - and he provides some much needed talent at the guard positions for the Nets.
Grade: B
Overall: B
Props to the Nets for finally calling it quits and starting the long rebuild. They are still not even close to contending, but they did a nice job of taking two solid prospects in the draft that can be contributors at the next level.
Where the Nets go from here:
Trade Brook Lopez: This one should be self-explanatory. Brook Lopez can win them some games, which at this point is a bad thing for a team that won’t be anything better than mediocre. Lopez has size and is one of the top offensive bigs in the game, so he should command some trade offers.
Throw Billy King’s Phone in the Ocean: Billy King has made some dumb trades in his tenure with the Nets – like trading the pick that ended up being Damian Lillard for Gerald Wallace. And although he made some nice selections in the draft, the Brooklyn faithful shouldn’t trust him just yet.
Dangle Everyone BUT Chris McCullough, Caris LeVert, RHJ, and Isaiah Whitehead on the Trade Block: The Nets still have relatively few picks in the next few years, and should look to continue stockpiling future assets.
