Obviously the first move the 49ers need to make is to fire Trent Baalke. Shortly after that fire Chip Kelly. To replace Kelly I have the 49ers hiring Kyle Shanahan. They can give his dad some sort of advisor role but dont give him any sort of authority.
The 49ers were going to be about $45 million under the cap before re-signing Vance McDonald. McDonald got a 5 year $35 million deal, without seeing the exact structure of the deal I will just assume he will count for a $7million cap hit. So with $38 million in cap space the first roster move for SF is to cut Kaepernick. Cutting Kap will save 16.9 million in cap space. Ahmad Brooks and Antoine Bethea could also be cap casualties with potential cap savings of $7.8 mil and $5.75 mil respectively, but for now i have them sticking around.
So with an estimated $55 million in cap room I have the 49ers first signing Jay Cutler after he is released by the Bears. He should come at a discounted price and fits the Shanahan offense. He can play until the 49ers have their QB of the future and some roster help for whoever that may be.
After Cutler the 49ers go out and sign Brandon Williams NT from Baltimore. SF has invested 1st round picks on the d-line the last 2 years and still struggle against the run. Williams gives them a big plug in the middle of the line and someone to protect Bowman next year. One last move the 49ers make in free agency is they go out and get Riley Reiff to play right tackle.
A Staley, Reiff, Garnett start to the line and the Armstead, Buckner, Williams d-line should give the Niners a chance to at least be competitive.
Come draft day the 49ers should be picking 2nd overall. At #2 my 49ers draft board would be Trubisky #1, Garrett #2. Trubisky would give them a great fit for Shanahan's offense and with Cutler on the roster it would give Trubisky a year on the bench to develop. Assuming Trubisky is their first round pick my 2nd round targets would be Feeny/Corey Davis/E. Engram. In the 3rd I would target Elfein/ D. Dawkins/ Stringfellow.
