2020 Draft Grade: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Published at 4/27/2020

With the draft in the books time to go back and do a wrap up of how teams made out. I might be a bit of a harsh critic to the top 3 round picks, but that is where you need to hit in the draft to be successful. Sure most of the league is 4th rounders and later, but any that turn into Pro Bowlers or All-Pro players is mostly out of luck. So without further adieu, let's dig deeper in the Tompa Bay Gronkaneers......I mean Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
1 (13) - Tristan Wirfs OT Iowa - A
2 (13) - Antoine Winfield Jr S Minnesota - B-
3 (12) - Ke'Shaun Vaughn RB Vanderbilt - C+
I was never as high on Wirfs as others if he were to be drafted as a left tackle, but falling to the Bucs to be their right tackle, I love it. He is not a good fit as a left tackle in my opinion with his lack of length or top quickness. At Iowa his tape does not display the same sort of athleticism he has displayed at the Combine. I will not be surprised if he does end up disappointing. At the very worst he will be a top fledged guard much like Braden Scherff. The only problem is the Bucs already have a talented interior to their offensive line so if he fails at right tackle, I am not sure where he fits into the Bucs plans. The value was much too good to pass on as one of the top tackle prospects on many peoples boards and falling as the last one remaining. Then to me Winfield was not a bad pick in the 2nd round, but I think they got jumpy seeing McKinney, Dugger, and Delpit all flying off the boards before their selection. He is a heady defender much like his father as a instinctive ball hawking type defender. My only concern is his health and size that could be an issue in the NFL. I also did not like them passing on more talented players at running back or receiver that they could still use. They did come around and snag Vaughn, but to me he is not a real fit in the Bucs offense. He is not much of a versatile running back like Brady nor coach Arians would like. To me he is a one dimensional smaller back who has lack of explosion in my opinion an they could have done better.
5 (16) - Tyler Johnson WR Minnesota - B
6 (15) - Khalil Davis DT Nebraska - B-
7 (27) - Chappelle Russell LB Temple - C-
7 (31) - Raymond Calais RB La. Lafayette - C-
This is a very middle of the road made by Jason Licht in my opinion landing solid albeit unspectacular players throughout the draft. I really love Johnson as a prospect as at the very least a 10-15 snap type receiver. His smaller hands do make him susceptible to drops, but his ability to move in the open field and get open is his best trait. The drops could be his undoing with Brady and his big trust issues with drops, but his ability and value here is just too good to pass up on here. The pick of Davis is also interesting due to his athletic upside to be a talented prospect to develop along the Bucs defensive line. Their 7th round picks are almost forgettable, but so are most 7th rounders. I kind of did not understand moving up just one pick for Wirfs since I doubted the 49ers would have selected him since word of Joe Staley did not emerge until Day 3. Even then Kinlaw was certainly in their sights over Wirfs. All in all this was a very solid draft, but one where I thought they could have done a lot lot better. The overall grade though is a B- where I can see it all being derailed if Wirfs does not pan out at either tackle spots like they would hope. They also never really found a better running back to better support Brady. However, having Tyler Johnson as a 3rd receiver is not a bad pick either and could be their best from this class.
