With the draft in the books time to go back and do a wrap up of how teams made out. I might be a bit of a harsh critic to the top 3 round picks, but that is where you need to hit in the draft to be successful. Sure most of the league is 4th rounders and later, but any that turn into Pro Bowlers or All-Pro players is mostly out of luck. So without further adieu, let's go over Joe Douglas' first draft as GM of the Jet.

1 (11) - Mekhi Becton OT Louisville - B-

2 (27) - Denzel Mims WR Baylor - C+

3 (4) - Ashtyn Davis DB Cal - B+

3 (15) - Jabari Zuniga DE Florida - C-

In his first draft, Joe Douglas has left me feeling.....meh. They had a shot at taking Tristan Wirfs, but passed on him for the biggest upside tackle with the lowest floor in Becton. I am not sure it was a wise move seeing as how badly they need to get the left tackle spot right. Wirfs also has more upside thanks to his versatility to move around on the line. Being so big and limited technique wise I am not sure he can fit anywhere, but tackle. I do not hate this pick since they did address a huge need no matter how big the gamble and avoided temptation with one of the top receivers with their first pick. That has been one of the biggest pitfalls for the Jets in the past reaching for more flashy names over more needed blockers and defenders. Mims was highly thought of after blowing it up at the Combine with his athletic gifts and has many thinking he could be the next D.K. Metcalf, albeit less chiseled in the abs region. However, Mims will not have the benefit of having Russell Wilson throwing him open and will need to work with the young Sam Darnold that is still a work in progress. I also thought a corner or edge rusher would have been better fits here than a big project receiver like Mims. Davis is my favorite of their top three rounds picks with his ability to play either safety or slot corner. Preferably I would like to see him at slot corner, which means Jamal Adams is still on the roster. If he is still there then they will have a nice secondary in the middle of their defense with Davis on the slot with Mayes and Adams at the safety spots. Zuniga is a throw away pick in my opinion as with most Florida Gator defenders of late. Outside of the aforementioned Mayes there has been very few Florida defenders that have hit in the NFL. Zuniga is a much too big of a project for a young defense that so desperately needs a top edge rusher and more corner help.

4 (14) - La'Mical Perine RB Florida - B+

4 (19) - James Morgan QB FIU - F

4 (23) - Cameron Clark OT Charlotte - B

5 (13) - Bryce Hall CB Virginia - A

6 (12) - Braden Mann P Texas A&M - F

So far this draft has been very inconsistent in my opinion where Douglas has found good players in Davis earlier then Perine, Clark, and Hall on Day 3. However, the first round pick had me unsure as well as the Mims or Zuniga pick has given me much promise. Perine I would not be shocked if he turns into a better back than Le'Veon Bell in due time and if they move off from him then it will only get better. Perine is not as powerful as his brother Samaje, but is a better fit in a modern day offense with his hands and quickness. Morgan makes absolute no sense to me and if they wanted a better back up why not get a veteran who can be useful for Darnold in the quarterback room. I doubt he pushes Darnold for the starting job and for a team with so many needs a back up project quarterback seems like a big waste. I like Clark's upside and could be a nice guard in the future for the Jets who need more blocking help. Out of all their picks to me the best has to be Hall who would have been in conversations as a top corner pick had he not had injury concerns. My only concern is that they did not bring in any other corners in this draft. I can bag on a punter being selected, but in the 6th round it certainly is not the worst thing in the world. All in all this was an okay draft, but I felt with such big need at corner, edge rusher, and offensive line I thought they could have done much better. In his first draft at the helm I would give him a B- and I think there is much upside here with guys like Mims, Zuniga, and Hall. However, I am not too hopeful with a lot of these guys being big boom or bust type players.
