Cleveland Browns Off-Season Plan

I would release Robert Griffin III (amongst others) and increase the cap space to 115 Million

Trade Danny Shelton nose tackle

Re-sign: Terrelle Pryor WR 9 million (4 year deal)
Jordan Poyer S 1.1 million (2 year contract)

Free agents:

Kevin Zitgler 26 G 12 million (6 year deal)
JC Tretter 26 OC 9 Million (7 year deal)
Larry Warford 25 G 7 million (5 year deal)
Tony Jefferson 25 SS 7 million (5 year deal)
Riley Reiff 28 OT 7 million (4 year deal)
Prince Amukamara 27 CB 11 million (4 year deal)

All predraft signings 63.1 Million

Remaining Cap Space: 50.9 million

Trade Danny Shelton & the #108 pick to Kansas City for the #27 pick overall.

Round 1: Miles Garrett DE Texas A&M
Round 1: Marlon Humphries CB Alabama
Round 1: Malik McDowell DT Michigan State
Round 2: Alvin Kamara RB Tennessee
Round 2: Best Available Player*

Cleveland has money to spend and are desperate so why not rebuild from the foundations (offensive line & defense) up? Following this plan, Cleveland would have one of the best offensive lines in football. Signing Tony Jefferson and Amukamara would be a step in the right direction in terms of the secondary and drafting arguably the best cornerback in the draft can't hurt, which would also allow Hayden rest and prolong his season. Garrett and McDowell could be a force to be reckoned with and Kamara is an underrated breakaway back. With a little help, who knows what Cody Kessler can do?

Since I've taken heat over the Danny Shelton trade I'll clarify my thoughts here. Yes many of you are correct in that you can have a NT in a 4-3 hybrid scheme (like the Oakland Raiders for example). The base front would be an over or under and a nose tackle could be used in a shade or head up technique. In this situation the NT's job is to take on the double team freeing up the linebacker to make plays and also to stop the run. He needs to be strong and immovable (large) which is totally Danny Shelton.

The reason I'm passing on Danny Shelton is because from what I have seen, Greg Williams only runs an even 4-3 defense without a nose tackle. In this system the defensive tackles would line up directly against the guard and needs to be quicker and faster than a NT giving him the ability to shoot through the gap at the snap of the ball.

In the end, I don't think Shelton is quick enough and would have to spend a year losing weight, ) and learning a new technique. I just think that by trading him to a 3-4 team where he can be in a zero technique or a 4-3 team with a shade would be more beneficial to all.

And as far as the guards go, Zitgler is one of the top guards in football and the same goes for Tretter at center. Warford is better than Bitonio and Graco depending on which rating system you listen to when you consider that most teams didn't bring their "A" game when playing the Browns. Worst case scenario is that you trade Greco and let Warford and Bitonio battle for the other spot. You always need backups and Warford can probably play three positions.

As for Shon Coleman, I thought he was overdrafted last year due to the fact that there were very few NFL caliber tackles in last year's draft.  And again depending on who you listen to, Reiff improved greatly towards the end of last year after the switch to right tackle.
