Glennon signing a "Millen grade"… "Not so fast my friend"…

On the surface signing Glennon to become quarterback of the Chicago Bears seems asinine. I'll admit, 15 million on average over the next three years is too expensive. Especially given the fact that it appears the Bears were bidding against themselves. Many people complain about Glennon's lack of experience and below average quarterback rating as enormous red flags. To most, you are your statistics and in many cases those people are correct.  But let's take a look at Glennon's NFL experience before making any other judgments.

Glennon was a third round pick out of North Carolina State in 2013. Mike Mayock is quoted as saying "I kind of like this pick. I see flashes of franchise quarterback in his game." According to his Wunderlich score, Glennon has above average starting NFL quarterback intelligence. His draft profile stated that he is tall (6'7) who uses his height to his advantage viewing the field. He has above average arm strength and is compared to Joe Flacco.

In his rookie season, Glennon eventually became starter for 13 games and had average success. Of course this was done during a time that then coach, Greg Schiano "lost the team" and was then fired along with general manager Mark Dominik. 

In year two (2014), a new head coach (Lovie Smith) and general manager (Jason Licht) were hired. They brought in former California head coach Jeff Tedford to run the offense. Tedford had no prior NFL experience and it showed after lasting only one season before being fired (who retreated to Canada the following year. So in two seasons, Glennon performed average under a "lost team" and really wasn't given much of a chance under an offensive coordinator who didn't understand the NFL.

In 2015 Jason Licht drafted Jameis Winston with the first overall pick, and was subsequently named starter the moment he signed his first NFL contract. From that point on, no matter what Glennon did, he was not going to move up the corporate ladder.

In the end, despite having some potential Mike Glennon was not given much of a chance. All Bears fans can do is hope that the coaching staff can nurture some untapped potential out of their new $15 million man.
