Round 1
The Broncos could do with more pass rush help. Sawyer is one of many talented D-line prospects at Ohio State who could put them in contention for the 1st round. He needs to translate more of his talent into production, and become more consistent, but the upside is absolutely there.
The Giants had a very solid '23 draft class in my opinion, but they missed out on all the receivers in the '23 draft and still lack a true No. 1 receiver. Ohio State continues their trends of having a ridiculous group of receivers, and could have 5 first rounders in 3 years. This year's version of Wilson-Olave is Harrison Jr.-Egbuka. The latter is in his own right a hyper talented 1,000 yard producer for the Buckeyes
Will Anderson was a great get for Houston, but they need more pass rush help, and I think DeMeco Ryans will value it highly. A lot of what I said for Jack Sawyer applies to his team-mate JT Tuimoloau. If he can become more consistent and translate his upside into production on the field, he has 1st round ability. Tumoloau is versatile and reminds me a lot of Drake Jackson, who my 49ers took in the 2nd round in 2022.
If Michael Thomas gets hurt yet again, his career is over. He’s already fortunate to be still on the roster after being a minimal factor for 3 consecutive years. If this transpires, the Saints will need more receiver help beyond Chris Olave, as they neglected the position during the draft aside from AT Perry in the 6th round. Wilson is built more like a tight end and is a mammoth of a WR at 6-7, 234. He has mismatch ability and is an interesting prospect, but is pretty raw at the moment.
Pick: Kingsley Suamataia (OT, BYU)
The Dolphins made a mistake taking another CB over a tackle such as Tyler Steen, in my opinion. Liam Eichenburg and Austin Jackson have both struggled in the NFL, and Terron Armstead has a history of injury. Tua Tagovailoa considered retirement due to injury and concussions, so it was disappointing they didn’t prioritize their protection more. If Tua is still around after the 2023 season, they need to fix their opposite tackle spot. Suamatia needs to develop in pass pro, but is a beastly run blocker and could be a quality right tackle prospect if he continues to develop.
Pick: Jer'Zhan Newton (DT, Illinois)
The Jaguars pass rush was disappointing last season given the extensive investment they’ve put into it. I have faith Walker will continue to develop, as he was always toolsy but raw, but even beyond him, Josh Allen has quietly regressed and is an impending free agent. K’Lavon Chaisson is a total bust, and their front-3 doesn’t have much IPR juice. Newton wisely returned to school, and has flashed serious interior pass rushing ability. Illinois has done a good job in manufacturing NFL talent recently, and could rise with a better ‘23 season. He would have probably been a late Day 2/ Early Day 3 pick if he went this year, but he has the talent to be far more than that.
The Chargers are in contractual flux presently with Austin Ekeler, and although they are probably right to not bend to a large contract, they will miss his services if/when he leaves. The Chargers could do with a franchise running back.Henderson is coming off injury, but when healthy has played like a future 1st rounder, with 3-down ability and being a potent passing game threat to boot.
The Lions have boasted a great offensive line the past 2 years, but they could get weaker at guard soon with Jonah Jackson due to be a free agent. Their remaining guard spot is also up for grabs between Halapoulivaati Vaitai (grossly overpaid by the previous regime) and Graham Glasgow, who is an average veteran. Cohen showed a lot of promise at Alabama before transferring to the University of Miami (not yet reflected on this site)
After releasing Calais Campbell, the Ravens are really short of talent up front, and could do with a better 3-4 DE/DT type. Taylor’s sack total disappointed last year, but he’s yet another talented DT in this potentially loaded class at the position and profiles well as a 3-4 end.
Elgton Jenkins is a stud, and Day 3 pick for 2022 Zach Tom (a draft crush of mine) exceeded expectations and should be starter. However, the rest of their offensive line is up in the air. Beebe is a brilliant pass protector and would have been a Day 2 pick this year if he had declared; Beebe could be a riser if he continues to develop. Although he has experience at tackle, he projects more as a guard for the pros. Beebe has the versatility the Packers seem to covet.
The Cowboys need more young pass rushers. Bralen Trice put himself on the map last year with 9.0 sacks for Washington, and could continue to rise if he develops further. He has excellent size, but isn’t blazing fast and is a better 4-3 scheme fit in my opinion.
The Bengals will probably say goodbye to Joe Mixon pretty soon. Corum is coming off an injury, but he’s been one of the most productive running backs in the NFL. If he can bounce back with another productive season, he may be too good of a pure football player to pass up in the 1st round, even if he isn't a special RB prospect.
As a 49ers fan, I thought we had a really good ‘22 draft considering we didn’t have a 1st round pick. Drake Jackson and Spencer Burford are projected starters for 2023, and Brock Purdy obviously exceeding expectations to a ridiculous extent. Our ‘23 class was much more mixed. It was highly disappointing to not see a successor to Mike McGlinchey drafted with prospects such as Blake Freeland, Dawand Jones and Nick Saldvieri all being on the board. OT will be a huge need next year, and Jack Nelson could be in play for the 1st round. Nelson possesses terrific size and is a balanced run/pass protector. A likely Day 2 pick in 2023 if he declared, Nelson could continue to rise this season.
The Bills need to get better along their OL and DL. T’Vondre Sweat is a strong nose tackle prospect compared to Jordan Davis based on people Charlie has spoken with. Sweat probably won’t be a 3-down starter and may be taken out in obvious passing situations, but is a road grader and incredibly powerful.
Pick: Rome Odunze (WR, Washington)
Devonta Smith and AJ Brown are amongst the best receiving duos in the NFL, but Quez Watkins was a bit disappointing in that 3rd slot last year. Jalen Reagor was also a complete bust for them, so I could see the Eagles dipping back into the 1st round for a receiver. Paired with potential early-round QB Michael Penix Jr., Odunze had a really good ‘22 season and could be primed to break-out in ‘23.
Trent McDuffie was great when healthy, but L’Jarius Sneed is an impending free agent in 2022, and in recent years, the Chiefs have let their secondary play their deals out and move on (Charvarius Ward, Juan Thornhill, Tyrian Matthieu). Melton was getting rave reviews from scouts Charlie talked too in 2023, but he ended up going back to school. In this underwhelming CB class on paper entering the season, Melton could be an early-round pick if he continuous to develop.
