2020 Free Agency QB placement grades.

So with most of the major moves in free agency wrapped up I decided to give some grades as to the qb signings in the NFL.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tom Brady

Grade: B+

This is probably the best the Bucs can do in the short term, Brady is likely to be a better option than Winston just based on the fact he won’t turn the ball over 30+ times.  This is not the same thing though as when the Broncos were getting Peyton manning in his mid-30s and he had 4 years left in his career.  Brady will be 43 and when you’re that old in the NFL you are truly year to year.  It is apparent that Brady’s stats are in slight decline, but with one of the best, if not the best 1, 2 punches at wr in the NFL this should help inflate his stats.  I would say it’s a solid move overall but a very temporary one as Brady really only has a year or 2 left of play that’s worth much.

Carolina Panthers

Teddy Bridgewater

Grade: B

It seemed with the Panthers coaching hire that the Panthers would be opting for a total rebuild; however that plan seems to have been thrown out the window with this signing.  Bridgewater is a solid capable qb who probably will put up quality game manager-esque numbers and win the panther’s games, but I don’t think I see a Super Bowl run here, they probably would have been better off tanking for Trevor; however this move will definitely win them some games…

Chicago Bears

Nick Foles (Traded)

Grade: D

No, Nick Foles didn’t play a whole lot last year, but when he did he was terrible.  Though he won a Super Bowl and no one can take that away from him, he just simply isn’t a long term starting qb in the NFL.  This has been proven multiple times now yet he continues to still get starting gigs, kind of like Ryan Fitzpatrick.  This will probably be a quick one and done year in Chicago.  Pretty sad that Mitch Trubisky is already a lost cause, I knew he was way overdrafted…

Indianapolis Colts

Philip Rivers

Grade: C-

Philip Rivers is clearly on a decline, yes he didn’t have a great line last year, but he still is showing signs of decline as a qb.  Contrary to popular belief, not all qbs can play until and past 40 like Tom Brady and Drew Brees.  Rivers may be able to put up mediocre stats this coming year, but it won’t be a big game changer, at best he will probably go to his typical 1 and done playoff game…

Tennessee Titans

Ryan Tannehill

Grade: D-

The Titans decided to go the safe route in resigning a game manager qb that will never win them a Super Bowl, if you just want to be ok and maybe make the playoffs this is ok, but if I were the Titans I would have gone all in for Tom Brady, as at least there would have been a chance at a Super Bowl with him.

New Orleans Saints

Drew Brees

Grade: B

In the immediate term this move makes sense, I think that it may have served the saints better in the long run to move on.  A first round exit after a 13-3 season makes making a change tempting, especially when Teddy Bridgewater won several of those 13 games, in the short run it’s a solid move, in the long run its not…

Dallas Cowboys

Dak Prescott

Grade: B

This really was the best option for Dallas, but if they break the bank for Prescott they probably will regret it with the cap hits they will have to take, Dallas has a lot of big contracts on the books, and paying a qb that’s not really elite level like he is will probably not lead to a perennial playoff team…

New England Patriots

Brian Hoyer

Grade: F

Sure Brian Hoyer has familiarity with the Patriots, but signing him and having him battle it out with Stidham (possibly) for the starting job makes no sense when there are multiple better options still out there, the Patriots are probably tanking this year as it is very unlikely that Stidham is going to be anything special…
