A Real Plan for the 2020 NFL Season

The NFL season draws near, or at least the planned one, and it really seems that the league has no real plan for the virus, and just seems to want to maintain the status quo and truck through it, this is a poor plan and just shows the leagues arrogance, which has also been shown by the NBA and MLB as well, though those leagues have at least tried to come up with plans. The NFL is setting themselves up for failure with the current plan for the season, and frankly it is disappointing.  I have a hard time looking forward to a season that is so poorly conceived and unlikely to work in its current plan, as it will likely fail or cause the league to have to pause after only a few weeks.  What I am suggesting gives the 2020 season a chance to happen, while not being a joke of a season like the MLB is currently attempting.  This plan will be outlined in several steps.

1. Delay and reduce the Season

The virus is at, and continues to be at its peak, there are more cases than ever across the country currently, things have not improved and the league needs to accept this.  The season should be delayed until the beginning of November and be reduced to 12 games.  This would provide the league with a legitimate season, as 12 games was how long the NFL season used to be long ago, and is the equivalent to a college football season, making it a good fit.  This buys time for things to improve and makes it so that the end of the season is only pushed back to January 17th if the bye is removed.  The Super Bowl bye can be removed too and would make it so that the season would only go until mid-February, hardly reducing the offseason by much.  You could also remake the schedule so that there is an emphasis on games played in domes/warmer cities later in the season to combat the cold weather.

2. Quarantined Training Camps

If the NFL wants a season this is a must, have a bubble system in place for training camp so that everything can start fresh as far as people not having positive tests, if there is a bubble, at least everyone or most everyone would start off without a major amount of cases, giving the season a better chance to actually work.

3. A modified schedule

The NFL could also give itself a better chance if it limited the amount of opponents teams played, this year only.  They could have teams only play teams in their division and their corresponding inter conference geographical division ex: AFC North vs NFC North etc.…

4. Strict Outside Contact

After Training camp players could be allowed to go home in there locality, but would be required to only be around family at home, and could not go out and about in the general public, posing risk to spreading the virus, the league could pay for services for players so that any errands or needs could be fulfilled.

This is all hypothetical, but at least it is a real plan that has a chance at working unlike the current one…
