2020 Cleveland Browns Season Preview

The 2020 season is upon us and for Browns fans there is a reasonable amount of optimism, cautious optimism, the team is better than last years albeit this time the expectations a little more tempered.  I believe that this is the most talented team that the team has fielded in the expansion era (post 1999) and this team should win more games than they lose for once.  You have a qb with a positive td/int ratio two pro bowl caliber wr’s and rb’s and a pro bowl caliber tight end.  If Baker Mayfield cant get it done this year the Browns will look elsewhere for a starter next year.  Don’t read into Case Keenum becoming a starter for this team, everyone knows what kind of qb he is at this point.  The biggest liability with this team is linebacker and it’s a big one, but the defense still has 2 pro bowl level starters in Myles Garret and Denzel Ward on other parts of the field, so that will take some pressure off the inexperienced group, provided those two can stay on the field for a change.  The team could not have a easier schedule and definitely has no excuses in this area this year with games against Washington, Jacksonville, Cincinnati (2), New York Jets and Giants all of which will probably not be very good teams, while avoiding some of the best teams such as KC, SF, NO, and GB.  Despite probably having a defense that will rank in the lower half of the league this team still has enough talent to have a winning record and it would be a disappointment if they don’t new coach or not.  The new staff will likely play to Mayfield’s strengths more, opting for more play action which he is statistically better at and that alone should help.  If he cant get it done this year I wouldn’t be surprised if the Browns opted for a big name vet qb whos nearing the end of their careers similar to the Peyton Manning and Tom Brady routes taken by the Broncos and Buccaneers, this team simply has too much talent to waste on an inferior qb or another rookie draft pick, although I am still optimistic it will work with Mayfield, you don’t break the rookie record for pass td in a season playing for a team coming off 0-16 by mistake.  So my final prediction for this team in 10-6.  I expect them to lose some games but win more than they lose and have a respectable year, likely a wildcard given Baltimore’s dominance but still closer to what fans were expecting last year.
