Assault Rifles - Why is there any resistance to making these illegal?

I try to keep an open mind but did lose it a bit on this one.  But please if you are a gun enthusiast feel free to punch back...but don't shoot me.

I'm not a gun guy.  I don't own one and don't want to own one.  I have brother in laws that do and through conversations with them and reading up on the topic a bit in the past I have some level I respect for the right to gun ownership.

But assault weapons?  1 guy took out 50 people and injured 53 more...that's basically the size of my high school graduating class.  It's close to the size of Dunbar's number...that is the limit to how many meaningful relationships one person can have with other people...all your family and friends.  1 guy can take hem out because he has an assault weapon and so nobody can stop them and they can't get away from him fast enough.

I do realize that laws can be tricky.  You can't simply make something illegal and it goes away.  And I'd be wary of writing laws with emotions still high.  But to all the gun enthusiasts out there who are going to shut down any discussion of restrictions what are you protecting?

The people who want to put a policy in place, well we want to try to protect people going to the movies, teachers, students, and our children.

What are you protecting by keeping assault rifles legal?

You want to protect your home get a hand gun.

You want go hunt, get a rifle.

What do you need an assault rifle for?

If it's to protect yourself against our own military than I'm sorry but that's not a realistic enough risk for me to take seriously.  If you want to tell me restrictions on assault rifles won't help reduce mass shootings then let me tell you, your assault rifles aren't going to help if you have to go against our own military.  They have tanks, and jets, and droids, and bombs.  And I certainly don't want everybody to have tanks and jets and droids and bombs.

This argument has turned silly when I'm talking about an individual trying to arm themselves enough to withstand an attack from our own military because it starts to seem like fantasy.  And that's my point.  To me if you are against restrictions on assault rifles I suspect your motivation is to protect the fantasy of defending yourself against our military or some zombie apocalypse.  Maybe the proposed restrictions to hand guns is misguided and naive but at least its in the name of a fantasy that involves people being safe.
