I'm an Eagles fan...or was an Eagles fan...maybe someone can tell me if I still am or not at the end of this...

An Eagles fan, after all is said about what they have said and done, is still a fan.  And a fan, per Wikipedia, is a supporter, is a person who is enthusiastically devoted to something or somebody.  That works for me..that makes sense to me.  Devotion is the right kind of word for what it is I've done with my Eagles.    Time and money and energy I have spent following this franchise from Buddy Ryan's Gang Green defense, through Rich Kotite and Ray Rhodes muddling along, to Andy Reid's slow ascent with McNabb and odd decline with the Wide 9 and a Firefighter trying to play offensive lineman, to the "NOW"... with Chip Kelly.

And I wouldn't take too much of what was spent back.  The highs and lows are part of the gig and you know that going in.  But you focus, you get into it, you learn the players, know their stories, enjoy their career moments and try to understand what they may mean as they are happening, and hope...hope hope....that what it means is the zenith, a championship, a point in time when these guys, our guys get to be the best team in the world for a given year.  And that is being a fan.

Now being extra ready to boo...

Extra ready to taunt...

Extra ready to call out a horrible performance as Santa Clause...

Well that's the Philly side of it...but everything else is simply being a fan.

And why do we think we are the best fans in the world which can be kind of obnoxious....Well because we are what we call knowledgeable.  I say what we call knowledgeable because I think what Philly Fans mean by that isn't just we know X's and O's, or that we are ready to call out our own team if they stink, though that is part of it.  It's that deep down we know it's not easy to be the best, and its not something the players, or the coaches control, it's something that may or may not happen to you if you are blessed with enough talent, push yourself to the limit, and catch a break or two.  And so what the Philly fan wants to see is that the one part you can control in action...blue collar doggedness.  And deep down we know that if our guys are willing to out work the other guys we may steal a championship from a more talented opponent...and deep down that is exactly the type of championship we want to win.  It's Rocky.  It's us.

So I'm an Eagles fan...or was an Eagles fan...I'm not sure which because I'm suffering from sever disillusion.  That is disappointment resulting from the discovery that something is not as good as one believed it to be.

Chip Kelly's Eagles, and tenure, have turned sour, 0 - 100 ...real quick.  Actually I'm hopeful it's just the speed of it that has had this type of effect on me, and I'd say the fan base.  Yeah how dumb of Philly fans to get tricked by a strong preseason..but that's not fair, that's not the whole of it.  In economics they say if supply goes up demand goes down...its a simple formula with one variable that decides everything.  Do you know what they say if more than one variable changes at a time..nothing they hold their breath and wait and see.

That's what we were forced to do as McCoy, Foles, Maclan, Mathis, Herramins, Cole all left the team.  There was no context..the preseason is all we had to see if a North South runner, a quicker trigger man, a younger receiver could all show us a Chip Kelly offense running closer to it's full potential.  In the meantime a defense that has been making the transition to a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense was entering year 3..and the down lineman looked to be in place, and the linebackers in full force getting the defensive captain back from injury.  The secondary still wasn't perfect but was better than the season prior for sure.

And it wasn't just the preseason.  There was a 80/90 yard drive over top of 2 or 3 drive killing pentalties vs. the Falcons, who held on for dear life as the Eagles surged on them.

And then there was the Dallas game.  And Alonso is hurt.  And Kendricks is hurt.  And no running back in the league can do much when defenders are meeting you at the hand off.  And Bradford looks shaky.  And I'm not sure the Eagles even have wide receivers...they have Mathews working the middle doing his best when not dropping passes.

To go from perhaps we maybe a NFC contender to we may be in the bottom 10 of the league with an aging offensive line is jarring.  And that is what has happened to Philly fans.

So step ginger around the fan in midnight an green because he may want to let you know about it..and most Philly fans don't let you know about it in some verbose blog...they just let you know about it..ask Santa.
